The Steady State Protecting Constitutional
Initially founded in 2016, The Steady State is a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c)(4) organization of more than 270 former senior national security professionals, including former officials from the CIA, FBI, Departments of State, Defense, Justice and Homeland Security. Drawing on deep expertise across national security disciplines including intelligence, diplomacy, military affairs, and law, we advocate for constitutional democracy, the Rule of Law, and the preservation of America’s national security institutions.
We are backed by committed financial supporters and a growing base of individual donors, and have developed a sustainable fundraising plan to allow The Steady State to carry out an ever-broadening set of activities.
Our Mission for 2025–2026: Support American rule-of-law democracy in the national security context
• Advocacy & Endorsements for the 2026 Election
We will actively engage in the 2026 midterm elections by endorsing candidates — regardless of party — who are committed to national security, constitutional democracy, and the rule of law. Our endorsements will be accompanied by organized advocacy efforts to ensure our commitment to our Constitutional democracy and the rule of law are front and center in electoral debates.
• Strategic Legal Engagement
The Steady State is assembling a legal strategy team to engage with litigation efforts nationwide, particularly in cases which challenge executive branch policies that undermine constitutional norms or national security structures. We will participate through amicus briefs, public legal advocacy, and coalition support for critical cases that define the future of America’s constitutional order.
• Media & Communication
We are launching an integrated media strategy combining original content delivery — primarily through social media channels — with an active program of engagement with journalists and media outlets. The Steady State will respond rapidly to developments in our areas of expertise, helping to shape the public narrative and amplify the voices of experienced national security professionals.

• Outside-the-Beltway Outreach
Recognizing the importance of reaching Americans outside of Washington, D.C., The Steady State is organizing a speaker program. Our members are available to appear in person or by video before politically engaged organizations, civic groups, and grassroots coalitions nationwide, sharing nonpartisan expertise on the threats facing American democracy and national security.

The Steady State is not alone – numerous organizations and institutions, large and small, are working to protect our nation. The Steady State actively engages with other nonprofits, the Congress, academic institutions, and other elements of civil society.
