Democracy is a Contact Sport
America’s strength depends on more than presidents and military power. It depends on expertise, institutions, alliances, oversight, elections, and citizens willing to defend them. Civic courage becomes a form of national defense.
The Steady State continues to focus this week on the deliberate conversion of American strength into political power for the few by intentionally eroding our institutional foundations. As foundations weaken, so does America’s ability to understand economic and military threats, anticipate crises, command allied confidence, and, most significantly in this moment, resist the abuse of power that, in turn, threatens the welfare of its citizens.
The challenge before us is larger than choosing who governs. It is deciding what kind of government we are willing to preserve. It requires us all to become witnesses—to pay attention, ask questions, document what they see, challenge abuses, demand accountability, and refuse to normalize the erosion of our constitutional government.
Civic courage is not optional. In this moment, civic courage is a form of national defense.
