FREDONIA PROJECT – SITREP 27: CHANGES IN PRESIDENT TRUMP, AS OBSERVED, NOT DIAGNOSED, 1 APRIL THROUGH 30 JULY 2026

SUBJECT: SITREP: OBSERVED CHANGES IN PRESIDENT TRUMP (1 APRIL – 30 JULY 2026)

SUMMARY:

IN ACCORDANCE WITH MFA DIRECTIVE 1826-APRIL-1, THIS EMBASSY HAS INITIATED A REGULAR SERIES OF ANALYTICAL DISPATCHES REGARDING THE INTERNAL DYNAMICS OF THE UNITED STATES. THE SERIES, DESIGNATED “THE FREDONIA PROJECT,” WILL BE CIRCULATED UNDER STANDARD SITREP PROTOCOL. UNAUTHORIZED PUBLICATION HAS BEEN OBSERVED VIA THIRD-PARTY ENTITY KNOWN AS “THE STEADY STATE.” PRESUMED LEAK. NO ACTION REQUIRED.

Situation Reports (SITREPS) from Fredonian Embassy, Washington D.C., have, before now, focused on events, actions or policies of the Trump administration. This SITREP will focus on observations of senior Fredonian Embassy officials. The observations detail changes in President Trump, changes that may be affecting US policy or directions. These are not medical diagnoses; simply interpretations and observations.

April 2026: Trump’s social media posts and public remarks drew renewed concern for rambling, confusing, or impulsive behavior. On April 14, 2026: Maryland Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin reportedly asked for a neuropsychological evaluation, citing expert concerns about dementia-like symptoms. On April 30, 2026: More than 30 physicians issued a public warning saying Trump showed “rapidly worsening” cognitive and judgment problems, including tangential speech, factual confusions, and apparent sleepiness at events. (Ambassador Comment: The comments describing concerns above are similar to comments made during Trump’s first administration, but this time the US President seems to exhibit more concerning symptoms more often. Most of our officers have no direct interactions with President Trump. All of those officers plus the Ambassador, however, have heard worries expressed by many of our US and foreign counterparts.)
May 2026: The 30 April doctors’ warning was widely covered and circulated through multiple channels, including sites that focus on health, those that emphasize policy, and sites concentrating on political stances, actions and developments in the US. The reporting emphasized claims of disorganized speech, impulsive late-night posting, and fixation on perceived enemies. (Ambassador Comments: Some of the most interesting, while scathing, reporting on Trump’s apparent mental decline, come from the opening monologues of late night comedians. While those commentators may not be highly qualified to judge the US President’s “mental state,” they are certainly interested in the accuracy of their “reporting,” especially given that Mr. Trump has taken direct aim at most of them, managed to get one of them out of the public eye (for now) and almost succeeded in getting a second host fired.)

June 14, 2026: As reported in our last SITREP, Mr. Trump celebrated his 80th birthday on the 14th of June and tried hard, and unsuccessfully to hijack the nation’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the country. The president sponsored a cage fighting event on the White House grounds as well as a “Great American State Fair,” on the National Mall which lasted for 16 days. The cage fighting event damaged the White House Grounds, and the Great American State Fair drew limited attendance. (Ambassador Comments: The US President’s efforts to focus on himself were cringeworthy, at best. His attempted glorification of cage fighting and the Great American State Fair managed to backfire mightily; the cage fighting was reported by the New York Times to have been a “tacky, bloody gladiatorial” event, while his supporters praised it as a unique populist event. The Great American State Fair, was a similar while yet spectacular flop drawing sparse crowds. The low attendance was likely the result of a combination of the intense Washington heat and the sky-high prices for a bottle of water to cool the attendees down.) Mr. Trump’s public remarks at the Capitol drew additional attention to his “speaking style” and possible lapses. Later in June, commentary on Trump noted that he appeared to be sleepy and less alert than usual, feeding broader questions about his age, fitness and decline. (Ambassador’s Comments: Going by what Trump looked like during many of his appearances, “less alert than usual” seems to mean “actually asleep.”)

July 8–12, 2026: During the NATO Summit, held in Ankara, Turkey from July 7 -8, Trump made a series of high-profile verbal gaffes which received additional attention worldwide. The US President referred to the nation of Japan as, “the Islamic Republic of Japan,” appeared confused about who Zelenskyy and Putin were and how they differed, and called Tik Tok, Tic Tac. These unfortunate misstatements were only a portion of the wider pattern of public verbal errors that characterized Trump’s performance in late July, 2026; in fact, follow-up coverage said critics saw the NATO slips as part of a wider pattern of public verbal errors. Additionally, polling and commentary illustrated increased public concern about Trump’s age and mental acuity. (Ambassador Comment: While it seems almost overkill to make additional comments about Trump’s increasingly antic behavior and mental incapabilities, we cannot emphasize strongly enough that this man, the President of the United States controls the mightiest military in the world, has already started, stopped and started again, a war with Iran, a war which has undergone a couple of cease fires and a couple of restarts; invaded Venezuela and kidnapped their leadership; evinced an interest in doing something, unclear what, in Cuba; and has not stopped the already-proven-to-be-deadly actions of what seems to be his private army, ICE.
Some of Mr. Trump’s predecessors have begun unpopular wars and military actions. While these actions and the Presidents who undertook them were often not wildly popular, the US leaders knew the names of the countries, what actions they were ordering, and the acceptable boundaries of their actions. One might be hard pressed to say the same about Mr. Trump.)
