Statement on the Passing of Robert S. Mueller III

The Steady State mourns the passing of Robert S. Mueller III, a public servant whose life and career exemplified fidelity to the Constitution, the rule of law, and the highest traditions of federal service. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Robert Mueller’s career spanned some of the most consequential chapters in modern American history. As a federal prosecutor, he earned a reputation for rigor, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice. As Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he led the Bureau through the darkest days following the attacks of September 11, 2001, helping to steady the institution and the nation at a moment of profound uncertainty. Under his leadership, the FBI undertook a critical transformation into a 21st-century, intelligence-driven agency, while preserving its core professionalism, its institutional culture, and its deep respect for the rule of law.

Mr. Mueller understood, as few leaders have, both the history of the FBI and the Department of Justice and the responsibilities that history imposes. He was mindful of the Bureau’s strengths and its past failings, and he led with a clear-eyed appreciation of the need to safeguard civil liberties while protecting national security. His tenure reflected a disciplined balance between operational effectiveness and constitutional restraint.

In later years, as Special Counsel, he again answered the call to serve, leading the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election with characteristic independence, care, and professionalism. At a time of intense political division, he remained steadfast in his adherence to facts, evidence, and the law.

For many members of The Steady State, Robert Mueller was more than a respected public figure. He was a model of what public service can and should be. His example guided careers, shaped institutions, and reinforced the enduring principle that no individual is above the law.

Robert Mueller was a patriot, a great lawyer, and a principled leader. He embodied the values that animate The Steady State: integrity, accountability, and a resolute commitment to constitutional governance.

He will be deeply missed. But he will remain an example of what can and must be done to protect our American democracy.
