What We Remember Matters
What shapes the resilience of our democracy? In part through the optic of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, The Steady State examined what happens when warnings are missed, fear overwhelms judgment, expertise is dismissed, institutions are weakened, history is forgotten or ignored, and when political power becomes more important than the rules designed to constrain it. Vigilance, independent expertise, institutional integrity, transparency, and accountability consistent with our constitutional values of justice and due process, are critical to that resilience.
Public servants and citizens alike have a responsibility to uphold the laws, norms, and institutions that make self-government possible. Democracy does not disappear in a single dramatic moment—it erodes incrementally when people stop questioning, stop remembering, stop participating, or assume that someone else will defend it.

THE MISSION
The Steady State continues its nationwide endorsement effort to help ensure Congress is filled with leaders who will protect the Constitution and defend the rule of law. And we file criminal referrals to push back corruption and this administration’s lack of respect for that rule of law.
Founded in 2016, The Steady State is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) organization of more than 400 former senior national security professionals. Our membership includes former officials from the CIA, FBI, Department of State, Department of Defense, and Department of Homeland Security.
