The Republic Still Belongs to Us; Can We Keep it?

The Constitution was never intended to preserve itself. Its survival has always depended upon the character of the people entrusted with it. That remains as true on this Fourth of July as it was in 1776.


This week The Steady State remained dual focused: On the very real nature of America’s continuing democratic decline AND the very real responsibility and power of citizens to shape what comes next.

Our Democracy’s erosion continued, through an accumulation of small exceptions that become accepted precedents. Temporary emergency measures that become permanent. Political loyalty that displaces professional expertise. Public trust that declines. A level of corruption so blatant as to become commonplace. Citizens who become exhausted. Institutions that, sometimes forcibly, adapt to new norms until the extraordinary becomes routine.

And: Citizens can still reverse the trend. Our republic’s future does not rest in the hands of just one man or group, nor solely with elected officials. It depends upon teachers who cultivate informed citizens, election workers who protect public confidence, career public servants who honor their oaths, journalists who pursue truth, judges who preserve the rule of law, allies who uphold democratic partnerships, and ordinary citizens who remain engaged rather than resigned.
