What Are We Prepared to Do?
It is easy to catalogue what is going wrong. It is harder—and more important—to decide what we will do about it. This week The Steady State moves from political exhaustion and attacks on expertise to elections, public service, and the enduring responsibility of citizens to defend constitutional government.
Democracy survives not because its institutions are self-protecting, but because citizens and professionals decide that those institutions are worth protecting. The Steady State makes a case this week that the defense of constitutional order is ultimately a human responsibility—and this is not a time for despair. Exhaustion is not apathy; expertise is not disloyalty; dissent is not treason; professional judgement is not a conspiracy; elections are not merely periodic rituals; and public service does not end when the government paycheck stops. The question is not “What is happening to America?” It is “What are we prepared to do about it?
